Trujillo City Tour

After hotel pickup, your Trujillo sightseeing tour starts at the city’s main square, the Plaza de Armas, known for the Freedom Monument, a large statue created by German artist Edmund Möeller. Learn about the significance of this multi-tiered sculpture from your guide, and then head to the Trujillo Cathedral, a beautiful yellow colonial building originally constructed in 1647 that sits on the square. Next, visit the Urquiaga-Calonge House, a colonial mansion now owned by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru, and then take a panoramic driving tour through the city to see sights like Belem Church, Baanante House, the Central Market and shopping arcades. Continue to the National University of Trujillo Museum of Archeology, Anthropology and History (Museo de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia de la Universidad Nacional de Trujillo). Cajamarca City Tour

The highlight of every Cajamarca city tour is a visit to the Ransom Room, which the last Inca emperor, Atahualpa, commanded to be filled with "once with gold, twice with silver," in efforts to fulfill his ransom to the Spanish conquistadors keeping him hostage. Although the Incas sent the precious metals, the Spanish reneged on their promise and killed Atahualpa in Cajamarca. In the morning, after your breakfast, you'll drive to Cumbemayo, a collection of fascinating rock formations called the Frailones, Stone-Age petroglyphs, and a pre-Inca aqueduct that is still in operation. After exploring the Cumbemayo area,continue to the necropolis of Otuzco, where the graves of the Cajamarca people, who flourished between 500 and 1200 AD,are cut into a volcanic rock cliffside. In the afternoon, continue on to the Tres Molinos Farm, where excellent kinds of cheese and butter are produced. Return to your Cajamarca hotel for the night.

On this tour you’ll visit the ancient aqueducts and archeological wonders of Cumbemayo. This tour provides travelers with a good glimpse into the Peruvian past. The carved water canals at Cumbemayo are incredible and continue to baffle archeologists, one look at these smooth, straight structures and you too will be amazed. It’s thought that the canals were carved with obsidian hammers. They are at least 3,000 years old and provide evidence for the feats of hydraulic engineering that the inhabitants of this region were capable of. The canals divert water from the Pacific side of Peru to the Atlantic side. There are several enigmatic petroglyphs here as well. Some archeologists think that Cumbemayo was once used for religious purposes. No doubt about it, this is a spectacularly beautiful place, especially with its ichú grass and strange volcanic formations. Be sure to have your camera handy when visiting.

While you explore, learn about the important excavation that unearthed the Lord of Sipán, who was entombed with jewels and other treasures. Learn about the amazing discovery in 1992 of an ancient tomb that held an important member of Sicán society. Inside the tomb, archeologists found an enormous amount of masks, crowns, bracelets, weapons, armor and other precious metals and jewelry, most of which now resides at the National Museum of Sicán, your next stop. When you arrive at the museum in the town of Ferreñafe, take a 1.5-hour tour with your guide. Learn about Sicán life and culture as you examine artifacts like feathered funeral masks, textiles, pottery, gold and silver items, and other valuable objects found in the Batan Grande tomb.
