Located 1,016 km to the south of Santiago, with a beautiful view to the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes, the city is located in an ample amphitheater in the North end of the sine of Reloncaví. Its port, in the west sector, is protected by the Tenglo island. In 1852 the first German settlers arrived by sea, today the work made to transform impenetrable forests and swamps into productive land can be appreciated. From 1985, a new activity generated a strong economic and demographic development, the culture of the salmon. Today there are more than 30 breeding grounds, in addition to annexed industries of refrigeration, feeding, transport and services. Puerto Montt is in addition the connection center between continental Chile and the austral end with its multiple islands. From its wharf tourist circuits leave for the islands of the Sine of Reloncaví, the archipelago of Chiloé, Aisén, San Rafael Lagoon and the austral Patagonia.

Only 20 km from Puerto Montt, nailed in the shore of the Llanquihue lake, the third greatest natural lake of South America. In its waters is reflected the perfect cone of the Osorno volcano and the tops of the Puntiaguado, Calbuco and Tronador volcanoes. In its west shore are the tourist town of Puerto Octay, Frutillar and Llanquihue.

The city of Puerto Varas, also known as “the city of the roses”, formed from the arrival of German settlers who were based in the shore of the Llanquihue lake in the middle of the XIX century. The great growth of Puerto Montt (20 km double sided highway), has transformed this city-resort into a residential place which has enriched the urban life. Today Puerto Varas has an excellent hotel infrastructure, an important gastronomical activity with creative menus based on regional products and from the sea, cultural events, craftsmanship samples of pottery, wood, leather with carvings, colorful weaves and looms, in addition to being the departure point for fascinating tourist circuits in the surroundings of a dramatic geography that has turned the Region of the Lakes into the capital of tourism.
